In-game description

The Darksign signifies an accursed Undead.
Those branded with it are reborn after
death, but will one day lose their mind
and go Hollow.

Death triggers the Darksign, which returns
its bearer to the last bonfire rested at,
but at the cost of all humanity and souls.

Start of the game

  1. Every new character begins with the Darksign. No pickup, purchase or starting-gift choice is needed.

Notes

  • Emergency return: Returns you to your last-rested bonfire but destroys the souls and Humanity currently carried in the counters. It does not leave them in a new recoverable bloodstain.
  • Reusable: Is not consumed. Homeward Bones and the Homeward miracle provide return options that preserve what you are carrying.
  • Inventory: Soul items and Humanity items still in your inventory are different from the carried counters. Using the Darksign does not consume all those stored items.
