Weapon behavior

The displayed critical rating is 110. Thrusting swords have their own backstab and riposte attack values, so that number cannot be compared directly with a dagger rating to predict the final damage.

The left-hand strong input parries. The forward-plus-light input performs a retreating thrust instead of an ordinary kick, so it will not serve as the same shield-breaking move.

Reinforcement and comparison

Requires 7 Strength and 12 Dexterity, with a weight of 1.5. Dexterity is the stronger physical scaling attribute on the normal path, which starts at D Strength and C Dexterity.

Normal reinforcement reaches +15. Give Andre the Large Ember to continue beyond +5 and the Very Large Ember to continue beyond +10. Crystal reinforcement prevents ordinary repairs; upgrading it is a limited way to restore durability, not a permanent repair service.

In-game description

Weapon type: Thrusting Sword
Attack type: Thrust

Standard thrusting sword. Regular one-handed
attack can be delivered with shield held up.
Can parry with use of left hand.

Thrusting attacks pierce and are effective
against foes with hard exteriors, but the
wielder is left open to damage after a swing.

Where to find

Merchant purchase

Undead Burg

Cost: 600 Souls · Stock: ∞

Requirements

  • Reach Firelink Shrine after leaving the Undead Asylum.
  • Keep the male Undead Merchant alive and friendly.
  1. If you have not reached Undead Burg yet, leave Firelink Shrine by the stairs climbing toward the large stone bridge. Fight past the Hollows on the hillside and enter the water passage inside the bridge. Watch for the rat near the entrance, then follow the passage to the exit and stairs into Undead Burg.
  2. Follow the route through the buildings and up onto the rampart. Clear the Hollows and the crossbow soldier on the small tower, then enter the bonfire room beside that tower. Rest here before looking for the merchant.
  3. Leave the room and clear the nearby crossbow soldier and the Hollows on the lower platform. If you rested, these enemies will have returned.
  4. Look for the short walkway to a separate rooftop guarded by two soldiers with spears and shields. Cross to that roof and deal with both soldiers.
  5. Break the wooden crates around the stair opening on the rooftop, then go downstairs. Check the room for the Hollow hiding behind the furniture before stopping to shop.
  6. Go through the doorway leading outside onto the narrow ledge. Speak to the seated merchant and buy Rapier from his weapon inventory.
  • Keep attacks away from the merchant. Killing him permanently removes this shop for the current playthrough.

Enemy drop

Undead Parish

Requirements

  • Reach the parish church and the bonfire above Andre.
  1. From the church in Undead Parish, cross the long stone bridge to the building where Andre works. Rest at the bonfire inside, one floor above his anvil.
  2. Go upstairs and cross back to the church. Look for Balder Knights carrying a thin thrusting sword and a small round Buckler. There is one in the front section of the church and another upstairs. Draw them away from other enemies before fighting.
  3. Loot any item they leave behind. Return across the bridge to the bonfire and rest to bring the knights back, then repeat. You do not need to defeat the Bell Gargoyles to farm these knights.
  • Only the rapier-and-Buckler variant drops this item. Do not attack while it holds its sword out in a parrying stance.
  • This is a random drop. A clear of the church does not guarantee one.

Notes

  • Requirements and scaling: Requires 7 Strength and 12 Dexterity, with a weight of 1.5. Dexterity is the stronger physical scaling attribute on the normal path, which starts at D Strength and C Dexterity.
  • Shield thrusts: Its one-handed light thrust can be used while holding a shield up. Both attacking and blocking consume stamina, so leave enough stamina to survive the next hit instead of thrusting until the bar is empty.
  • Critical attacks: The displayed critical rating is 110. Thrusting swords have their own backstab and riposte attack values, so that number cannot be compared directly with a dagger rating to predict the final damage.
  • Offhand and evasive attack: The left-hand strong input parries. The forward-plus-light input performs a retreating thrust instead of an ordinary kick, so it will not serve as the same shield-breaking move.
  • Buying versus farming: Rapier-wielding Balder Knights can drop this weapon. The knights with a straight sword and a larger shield have different weapon drops. Buying from the Burg merchant avoids waiting for a random drop.
  • Weapon buffs: The normal, Raw and Crystal versions can use resins and weapon-enchantment spells. The magical and elemental paths cannot. Magic and Enchanted shift elemental scaling toward Intelligence; Divine and Occult use Faith.
  • Normal reinforcement: Normal reinforcement reaches +15. Give Andre the Large Ember to continue beyond +5 and the Very Large Ember to continue beyond +10. Crystal reinforcement prevents ordinary repairs; upgrading it is a limited way to restore durability, not a permanent repair service.
  • Boss forging: The Giant Blacksmith can use a normal +10 Rapier to make Moonlight Butterfly Horn with the Soul of the Moonlight Butterfly, or Dragonslayer Spear with the Soul of Ornstein. The Rapier is consumed in the change, so keep another copy if you want to keep using it.
