Weapon behavior

Its displayed critical rating is 160. Backstabs and ripostes are a central use, but the rating alone does not predict which weapon deals the most damage against a particular target.

Its delayed strong thrust builds toxic; ordinary light attacks do not. Once inflicted, this toxic drains health and slows stamina recovery. It is separate from ordinary poison and bleed.

Reinforcement and comparison

Requirements

  • Defeat the Sanctuary Guardian and Knight Artorias.
  • Keep the Soul of Artorias for the exchange.
  1. Defeat the Hydra in Darkroot Basin, follow the shallow lake edge into the rear cave and defeat the golden crystal golem to free Dusk. Reload if the golem has not appeared.
  2. After placing the Lordvessel, enter the Duke's Archives and kill the crystal golem near the beginning for the Broken Pendant. Return to Dusk's former cave and examine the portal to enter Oolacile.
  3. After Artorias, light the Oolacile Township bonfire beyond his arena. Reload or leave and return to find Ciaran kneeling at the grave in the arena.
  4. Speak to Ciaran with the Soul of Artorias and agree to give it to her. She gives both Gold Tracer and Dark Silver Tracer. Manus does not need to be defeated.
  • The trade consumes Artorias's soul, which also makes Abyss Greatsword. Ciaran can leave, so decide while she is available.

Requirements

  • Meet Ciaran after Artorias, before giving her his soul.
  1. Return from the Township bonfire to the grave in Artorias's arena. If you choose to fight Ciaran instead of trading, defeat her and collect the tracers and her armor.
  2. This route preserves Artorias's soul. Buy or prepare any supplies before the fight; her Lloyd's Talismans can stop Estus healing.
  • Ciaran's death is permanent for the journey. The exchange and death drop are alternative ways to receive these weapons.

  • Toxic strong attack: Its delayed strong thrust builds toxic; ordinary light attacks do not. Once inflicted, this toxic drains health and slows stamina recovery. It is separate from ordinary poison and bleed.
  • Hands and paired weapons: In the left hand, the strong input parries. Carrying Gold Tracer in the other hand does not enable a separate dual-wield stance or a combined attack input. Each hand still uses its own actions.
  • Upgrades and buffs: Uses Twinkling Titanite up to +5. It cannot use resins or weapon-enchantment spells and cannot change to elemental reinforcement paths.
  • Exchange alternative: Ciaran gives both tracers for the Soul of Artorias, while defeating her before the exchange also gives her armor and preserves the soul. The peaceful exchange and the fight are alternative choices, not two copies of the same reward.
