Weapon behavior

One-handed light attacks can thrust while you hold a shield up. This lets you attack without dropping your guard, but an incoming hit and your thrust both draw on stamina.

The thrusts give reach in a narrow line. They are less suited to catching several enemies spread around you, and an enemy shield can stop an ordinary thrust.

Reinforcement and comparison

Requires 11 Strength and 10 Dexterity and weighs 3.5. Normal upgrades favor Dexterity scaling over Strength, beginning at D Strength and C Dexterity.

The Lightning version combines physical and lightning damage and removes attribute scaling. Raising Dexterity will therefore help a normal Spear's scaling damage but will not add the same scaling bonus to Lightning Spear.

Normal reinforcement reaches +15. Andre needs the Large Ember for +5 to +6 and the Very Large Ember for +10 to +11. Normal, Raw and Crystal versions can use resins and weapon-enchantment spells. Crystal reinforcement prevents ordinary repairs.

Magic and Enchanted add magical damage with Intelligence scaling; Divine and Occult use Faith. Fire and Lightning remove attribute scaling, while Chaos gains damage from held Humanity up to 10. These magical and elemental versions cannot receive temporary weapon coatings.

In-game description

Weapon type: Spear
Attack type: Thrust

Standard spear used commonly by soldiers.
Long reach, and can be used with shield up.
Effective against hard exteriors, and can hit
for high damage at the right moment of an
enemy's swing. But the hit radius is small,
and it is easily blocked by shields.

Where to find

Merchant purchase

Undead Burg

Cost: 600 Souls · Stock: ∞

Requirements

  • Reach Firelink Shrine after leaving the Undead Asylum.
  • Keep the male Undead Merchant alive and friendly.
  1. If you have not reached Undead Burg yet, leave Firelink Shrine by the stairs climbing toward the large stone bridge. Fight past the Hollows on the hillside and enter the water passage inside the bridge. Watch for the rat near the entrance, then follow the passage to the exit and stairs into Undead Burg.
  2. Follow the route through the buildings and up onto the rampart. Clear the Hollows and the crossbow soldier on the small tower, then enter the bonfire room beside that tower. Rest here before looking for the merchant.
  3. Leave the room and clear the nearby crossbow soldier and the Hollows on the lower platform. If you rested, these enemies will have returned.
  4. Look for the short walkway to a separate rooftop guarded by two soldiers with spears and shields. Cross to that roof and deal with both soldiers.
  5. Break the wooden crates around the stair opening on the rooftop, then go downstairs. Check the room for the Hollow hiding behind the furniture before stopping to shop.
  6. Go through the doorway leading outside onto the narrow ledge. Speak to the seated merchant and buy Spear from his weapon inventory.
  • Keep attacks away from the merchant. Killing him permanently removes this shop for the current playthrough.

Enemy drop

Undead Burg

  1. From the Burg bonfire, cross to the rooftop with the two spear-and-shield soldiers above the male merchant's room.
  2. Defeat the spear variants and inspect their drops. Rest at the bonfire to repeat. The sword and crossbow variants have different weapon rewards.

Enemy drop

Painted World of Ariamis

Requirements

  • Use the Peculiar Doll to enter the Anor Londo painting.
  1. Reach the central courtyard and find the clustered spear-and-shield Phalanx enemies around the monument.
  2. Defeat them and inspect their drops. Open the nearby gate shortcut back to the bonfire for repeated attempts.

Upgraded weapon from Mimic

Sen's Fortress

Requirements

  • Ring both Bells of Awakening and reach the interior boulder tracks.
  1. After the second pendulum section and the arrow-trap corridor, reach the interior staircase used by the rolling boulders. Wait for a boulder to pass and follow it downhill.
  2. At the bottom, turn into the side passage before the pit fills with boulders. Enter the room containing a chest and the bloodstained lift.
  3. The chest is a Mimic. Defeat it and collect Lightning Spear, or use a Lloyd's Talisman to put it to sleep and collect the weapon.
  4. If using the lift to leave, step off at the intermediate opening. Riding into the spiked ceiling is dangerous.
  • This is Spear on the Lightning upgrade path, not the miracle with the same name.

Notes

  • Requirements and scaling: Requires 11 Strength and 10 Dexterity and weighs 3.5. Normal upgrades favor Dexterity scaling over Strength, beginning at D Strength and C Dexterity.
  • Shield-up attacks: One-handed light attacks can thrust while you hold a shield up. This lets you attack without dropping your guard, but an incoming hit and your thrust both draw on stamina.
  • Narrow attacks: The thrusts give reach in a narrow line. They are less suited to catching several enemies spread around you, and an enemy shield can stop an ordinary thrust.
  • Alternate versions: Spear-wielding Undead Soldiers and the Phalanx in the Painted World can drop copies. Sen's Fortress contains a Lightning Spear from a Mimic. That pickup is this weapon on the Lightning upgrade path, not the Lightning Spear miracle.
  • Lightning changes scaling: The Lightning version combines physical and lightning damage and removes attribute scaling. Raising Dexterity will therefore help a normal Spear's scaling damage but will not add the same scaling bonus to Lightning Spear.
  • Reinforcement and weapon buffs: Normal reinforcement reaches +15. Andre needs the Large Ember for +5 to +6 and the Very Large Ember for +10 to +11. Normal, Raw and Crystal versions can use resins and weapon-enchantment spells. Crystal reinforcement prevents ordinary repairs.
  • Other upgrade paths: Magic and Enchanted add magical damage with Intelligence scaling; Divine and Occult use Faith. Fire and Lightning remove attribute scaling, while Chaos gains damage from held Humanity up to 10. These magical and elemental versions cannot receive temporary weapon coatings.
  • Reversion and boss forging: A blacksmith can revert the found Lightning Spear to normal Spear +10. A normal Spear +10 can then be consumed with Soul of the Moonlight Butterfly for Moonlight Butterfly Horn, or Soul of Ornstein for Dragonslayer Spear, at the Giant Blacksmith. Reversion does not refund the previous upgrade materials.
