Requirements
- Reach Firelink Shrine after leaving the Undead Asylum.
- Keep the male Undead Merchant alive and friendly.
- If you have not reached Undead Burg yet, leave Firelink Shrine by the stairs climbing toward the large stone bridge. Fight past the Hollows on the hillside and enter the water passage inside the bridge. Watch for the rat near the entrance, then follow the passage to the exit and stairs into Undead Burg.
- Follow the route through the buildings and up onto the rampart. Clear the Hollows and the crossbow soldier on the small tower, then enter the bonfire room beside that tower. Rest here before looking for the merchant.
- Leave the room and clear the nearby crossbow soldier and the Hollows on the lower platform. If you rested, these enemies will have returned.
- Look for the short walkway to a separate rooftop guarded by two soldiers with spears and shields. Cross to that roof and deal with both soldiers.
- Break the wooden crates around the stair opening on the rooftop, then go downstairs. Check the room for the Hollow hiding behind the furniture before stopping to shop.
- Go through the doorway onto the outside ledge. Speak to the seated merchant and buy Orange Guidance Soapstone from his inventory.
- Keep attacks away from the merchant. Killing him permanently removes this shop for the current playthrough.

Requirements
- The male Undead Merchant is still alive.
- You have not already bought Orange Guidance Soapstone.
- Follow the merchant route above to reach the outside ledge.
- If you choose to kill the merchant, collect his dropped items for Orange Guidance Soapstone.
- Killing him permanently removes his shop for this playthrough. You do not need to kill him to obtain the soapstone.
Notes
- Writing messages: A reusable tool for leaving messages for other players. Use the item to compose a message from the available phrases and place it where another player might need a warning or a hint.
- Reading and rating: You can read messages you encounter without buying the soapstone. Its menu also lets you rate a message you have read; you do not need to buy another copy for each message.
- Online purpose: Messages from other players depend on online play. This tool does not create a co-op summon sign or invade another world; those actions use different multiplayer items.
- Merchant alternative: If the male Undead Merchant dies before you buy it, he can drop the soapstone. Buying it is the option that leaves his other goods available.
- Rating a message: Use the stone and choose the rating option to rate the last message you read. You can also open the rating prompt while that message is on screen. Follow the displayed control for your platform.
- Online messages: Writing uses the game's message choices rather than unrestricted typed text. Player messages can give useful directions or deliberately misleading advice. Reading one does not make its claim reliable.
