In-game description

This crest opens a door in the
Darkroot Garden sealed by ancient magic.

The door leads to the grave of Sir Artorias
the Abysswalker. Many adventurers have left
for the grave, but none have returned,
for they make easy prey for local bandits.
With such dangers, the crest can do more harm
than good in the hands of the uninitiated.

Requirements

  • Keep Andre alive and friendly.
  1. From the Parish church, take the passage toward the building across from the church entrance. Descend to the bonfire, then continue downstairs into the workshop.
  2. Speak to Andre at his anvil. Buying ammunition does not require an ember or a particular stage of his blacksmithing work.
  3. Buy Crest of Artorias from Andre of Astora.

Requirements

  • Andre is alive and you have not already purchased the crest.
  1. Find Andre below the Parish bonfire. If you choose to kill him, collect the crest from his dropped items.
  • Killing Andre removes his shop and blacksmith services for the rest of this journey. Buying the crest preserves him.

Notes

  • Forest door: Opens the glowing circular seal on the stone door in Darkroot Garden. From Andre, pass through the Titanite Demon room and follow the main garden path to the sealed door.
  • Nearby bonfire: Strike the wall beside the sealed door to reveal a bonfire. The crest is not needed to uncover or use that bonfire.
  • Alternate forest route: The ladder beyond the Hydra lake in Darkroot Basin reaches the forest behind the sealed door. This bypasses the lock without opening it.
  • Different DLC key: Crest of Artorias is a base-game forest key. It is not the Crest Key for Gough's tower, and it does not open the portal into the DLC.
  • Master Key limitation: Master Key cannot unlock the crest door.
  • Later journeys: This key is removed when a new journey begins. Collect it again if you need to reopen its lock; unlocking the door in the previous journey does not keep it open.
