In-game description

This universal key opens any basic lock.
Tool of the trade for thieves.

But in the cursed land of the Undead,
most doors are better left unopened.

Where to find

Starting gift or class equipment

Character creation

  1. Choose Master Key as your starting gift, or start as Thief to receive it as class equipment.
  2. If you choose Thief, selecting a different gift avoids spending the gift choice on the key you already receive.

Merchant purchase

Firelink Shrine: aqueduct ledge

Cost: 5000 Souls · Stock: 1

Requirements

  • Ring both Bells of Awakening and keep Domhnall alive and friendly.
  1. Ring both Bells of Awakening to move Domhnall from the Depths to Firelink.
  2. From Firelink, climb the steps toward Undead Burg and the aqueduct. Look beneath the aqueduct for the narrow outside ledge where Domhnall now sits. Jump across the gap to reach him and speak to him.
  3. Buy Master Key from Domhnall of Zena.
  • The jump can drop you into the chasm. Line it up before leaving the main path.

Notes

  • Locks it can replace: Opens the upper Undead Burg house containing Gold Pine Resin, both entrances to Havel's watchtower, Lautrec's cell, the Depths bonfire room, Logan's cage and the adjacent treasure cage, and the upper New Londo door to the Valley of Drakes.
  • Locks it cannot replace: Does not open Griggs's house, the bridge descent to Lower Undead Burg, the Depths entrance, the large Blighttown gate, the crest door in Darkroot, the New Londo floodgate or the Sen's Fortress cage lift.
  • Early route choice: Opening the Valley door from upper New Londo lets you enter Blighttown from the waterwheel side. This skips the Depths route without collecting its ember or rescuing Laurentius.
  • New Game Plus: Master Key carries into later journeys, unlike ordinary progression keys. Previously unlocked doors reset, so interact with the compatible locks again.
  • No early boss reward: Asylum Demon does not drop Master Key. If you did not start with it, Domhnall's relocated shop is the ordinary purchase option.
