Requirements
- Place the Lordvessel and reach the Archives storage rooms.
- Place the Lordvessel to open the Archives route beyond Anor Londo. Progress through Seath's first encounter, escape the prison and return to the main library.
- Use the rotating staircases to reach the upper side room with a ladder. Climb down and operate the lever that opens the bookcase shortcut near the balcony bonfire.
- Search the storage room beside the mechanism for the stairs leading toward the garden. The ember chest is tucked between the bookcases, rather than in the garden or Seath's final arena.
- Open that chest, then leave the neighboring Mimic alone unless you intend to fight it.
- Return to Anor Londo's cathedral. Use the side stairs from the upper interior to reach the Giant Blacksmith at his anvil and give him the ember.
Notes
- Crystal path: The Giant Blacksmith can convert a compatible normal +10 weapon or shield into Crystal +0. Creation costs one Titanite Chunk. Reaching Crystal +4 uses seven more chunks, followed by one Titanite Slab for +5.
- Repair restriction: Crystal conversion greatly lowers durability and prevents ordinary repairs. Reinforcing to the next level restores durability, but this is limited by the remaining upgrades. At Crystal +5 there is no further reinforcement available to restore it.
- Permanent commitment: Crystal conversion cannot be reversed to recover the normal weapon. It keeps physical damage and attribute scaling, and compatible Crystal weapons can still receive temporary weapon buffs. It is not the same thing as a weapon made from Seath's boss soul.
- Hand-in and later journeys: Giving the ember unlocks the relevant modifications for that blacksmith for the rest of the journey. It is not spent once per weapon. Embers and their hand-ins reset in NG+, while already reinforced equipment keeps its upgrades. Collect the ember again if you want to make more weapons on that path.
- Using the unlock: Choose Modify Equipment for a path change or to cross its +5 or +10 limit. Ordinary reinforcement within an unlocked stage can be done at another blacksmith or with the Weapon Smithbox at a bonfire. Carrying an ember without giving it to the right smith does not unlock the modification.
