In-game description

Dragon scale for reinforcing dragon weapons.
Peeled from an ancient dragon.

A dragon is inseparable from its scales,
and the transcendent apostles, who seek
the perpetuity of the ancient dragons,
have crossed the very end of the earth
to seek this invaluable treasure.

Blighttown

  1. Reach the stone-tunnel bonfire at swamp level. Walk to the back of the tunnel and inspect the small raised area behind the bonfire.
  2. Open the chest there for one Dragon Scale. This does not require defeating Quelaag.

Encounter or quest reward

Darkroot Basin

  1. Descend the cliff path from Darkroot Garden to the lake. Defeat the blue Crystal Golems so they cannot interrupt the fight.
  2. Defeat the Hydra in the lake to receive one guaranteed Dragon Scale. Stay on the shallow shoreline side of the underwater drop rather than chasing its heads into deep water.

Ash Lake

  1. From the Blighttown swamp, enter the large root leading to the Great Hollow. Pass its concealed walls and carefully descend the branches to the beach at Ash Lake.
  2. Defeat the Hydra here for two guaranteed scales. Search the beach corpse near the Hydra, the hollow tree farther along the sand and the waterside corpse beyond the Man-Eater Shells for three more separate scales.
  • The Great Hollow descent includes Basilisks and lethal falls. Getting back out is much easier once bonfire warping is available.

Valley of Drakes / Painted World

  1. In the Valley of Drakes, defeat the large Undead Dragon resting above the narrow cliff path to receive a scale.
  2. For another fixed scale, obtain the Peculiar Doll from your Asylum cell and enter the large Anor Londo painting. Defeat the Undead Dragon across the Painted World bridge.
  3. These two Undead Dragons are separate one-time enemies, not the small respawning blue Drakes.

Repeatable enemy drop

Valley of Drakes

  1. From the Darkroot Basin tunnel bonfire, take the lift down into the Valley. Follow the cliff path to the blue Drakes near the New Londo floodgate.
  2. Fight them one at a time without backing off the cliff. Collect any scales they drop, then return to the tunnel bonfire to reset. These drops are not guaranteed.

Northern Undead Asylum

Requirements

  • Have Egg Vermifuge available to give away.
  1. Ride the Firelink-to-Parish lift and step onto the ledge above Firelink as it rises. Use the nearby roof and curved buttress to reach the large crow nest. Curl up and wait to return to the Asylum.
  2. At the Asylum arrival cliff, find the smaller nest on the side ledge. Listen for the unseen crow speaking; the large travel nest is not the trading spot.
  3. Leave one Egg Vermifuge inside the small nest. Quit and reload, then collect one Dragon Scale. Each different exchange works once per journey.
  • Leave only the requested single offering. Extra items do not produce extra rewards.

Dragon Eye duel

Requirements

  • Use a supported online connection and complete an eligible Dragon Eye duel.
  1. Join Path of the Dragon at the Everlasting Dragon at the far end of Ash Lake to receive the Dragon Eye.
  2. While online, place the Dragon Eye sign or summon a dragon challenger for a dragon duel. The winner receives a Dragon Scale.

Notes

  • Dragon reinforcement: Reinforces compatible dragon weapons through +5. The five upgrades cost 1, 1, 2, 2 and 4 scales, for ten total. Examples include Drake Sword, Moonlight Greatsword and Priscilla's Dagger.
  • Covenant offerings: The Everlasting Dragon also accepts scales for Path of the Dragon ranks. The cumulative offering thresholds are 10, 30 and 80. The Dragon Torso Stone is the rank +2 reward at 30; spending scales on reinforcement does not count as an offering.
  • Supply: The swamp chest, both Hydras, the three Ash Lake pickups and both Undead Dragons provide fixed scales. Blue Drakes provide a repeatable offline chance. Dragon duels provide a separate online route.
  • DLC weapons: Obsidian Greatsword uses Dragon Scales. The Guardian Tail instead uses ordinary Titanite, so a DLC tail cut does not automatically mean this reinforcement path.
