Requirements
- Obtain the Key to Depths.
- Defeat Capra Demon in Lower Undead Burg for the Key to Depths. Take the stairs beside its arena down to the locked door and use the key.
- Descend through the Hollow-filled rooms into the kitchen. Find the large Butcher working beside a table of meat, with dogs in the surrounding area.
- Clear the enemies and open the chest beside the butcher's work area. The ember is here, before the deeper sewers and Gaping Dragon.
- Return to the Undead Parish bonfire opposite the church, then go downstairs to Andre's workshop. Speak to him while carrying the ember and agree to hand it over.
Notes
- Normal and Raw unlocks: Andre can modify a compatible normal +5 weapon to +6, opening normal reinforcement through +10. He can also turn a normal +5 weapon into Raw +0, which can then reach Raw +5.
- Materials and later limits: The +5 to +6 modification costs one Large Titanite Shard. Creating Raw also costs one Large Titanite Shard. Normal reinforcement beyond +10 requires the separate Very Large Ember; Raw ends at +5.
- Choosing Raw: Raw raises base physical damage while reducing attribute scaling. It is a separate branch, not a requirement on the way to normal +15. Do not convert a weapon to Raw merely because you want to continue its ordinary reinforcement.
- Hand-in and later journeys: Giving the ember unlocks the relevant modifications for that blacksmith for the rest of the journey. It is not spent once per weapon. Embers and their hand-ins reset in NG+, while already reinforced equipment keeps its upgrades. Collect the ember again if you want to make more weapons on that path.
- Using the unlock: Choose Modify Equipment for a path change or to cross its +5 or +10 limit. Ordinary reinforcement within an unlocked stage can be done at another blacksmith or with the Weapon Smithbox at a bonfire. Carrying an ember without giving it to the right smith does not unlock the modification.
