Weapon behavior

Uses a shield bash instead of a left-hand parry. Carrying it does not provide a conventional parry action.

Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.

Stops poison, toxic and bleed buildup from successfully blocked enemy attacks. This does not provide swamp immunity or the same status blocking against other players.

Reinforcement and comparison

Reduces blocked physical damage by 80%, magic by 80%, fire by 80% and lightning by 70%. Starts with 77 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.

Reinforce to +5 with Twinkling Titanite. Reinforcement improves attack damage, but stability stays at 77 and the normal damage-blocking percentages stay unchanged. Has no elemental conversion paths.

Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.

Upgrading does not improve its 77 stability or its guarding percentages. Do not spend Twinkling Titanite expecting a stronger guard.

In-game description

Weapon type: Greatshield
Attack type: Strike

The steel greatshield used by Knight Artorias,
who succumbed to the Abyss.
Artorias, deeply scarred by the Abyss, used
this to form a barrier to protect his
compatriot Sif. Although this drained the
shield, its magic defense remains high.

Where to find

Rescue reward

Chasm of the Abyss

Requirements

  • Defeat Artorias and reach the Township Dungeon bonfire.
  1. From the Dungeon bonfire, descend into the Chasm. Follow the path beside the first groups of Humanity Phantoms toward the narrow ledge and disappearing floor.
  2. Follow the spectral cat through the lower passage toward the ruined lift tower. Activate the lift as a shortcut back toward Royal Wood.
  3. Strike the illusory wall beside the tower to reveal the chamber around young Sif. Defeat the surrounding Humanity Phantoms without attacking Sif.
  4. Wait for Sif to disappear and collect the shield left behind. Rescuing Sif also opens the related summon opportunity for Manus.

Notes

  • Requirements and weight: Requires 31 Strength and weighs 14.5.
  • Blocking at base reinforcement: Reduces blocked physical damage by 80%, magic by 80%, fire by 80% and lightning by 70%. Starts with 77 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.
  • Shield attacks: Uses a shield bash instead of a left-hand parry. Carrying it does not provide a conventional parry action.
  • Reinforcement: Reinforce to +5 with Twinkling Titanite. Reinforcement improves attack damage, but stability stays at 77 and the normal damage-blocking percentages stay unchanged. Has no elemental conversion paths.
  • Attack scaling: Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.
  • Temporary shield spells: Magic Shield and Strong Magic Shield can temporarily strengthen the left-hand guard when cast with a catalyst in the right hand. They replace one another, and two-handing the other weapon removes the shield enchantment. These are different from resins and melee weapon-enchantment spells.
  • Different Artorias shield: This is the damaged shield found in the DLC, separate from Greatshield of Artorias forged with Sif's soul. It blocks 80% physical damage rather than 100%, though its 80% magic reduction makes it useful against mixed physical and magical attacks.
  • Blocked status attacks: Stops poison, toxic and bleed buildup from successfully blocked enemy attacks. This does not provide swamp immunity or the same status blocking against other players.
  • Reinforcement limit: Upgrading does not improve its 77 stability or its guarding percentages. Do not spend Twinkling Titanite expecting a stronger guard.
