Requirements

  • Defeat Ceaseless Discharge.
  1. Defeat Quelaag and enter the Demon Ruins beyond the second bell. Defeat Ceaseless Discharge so the large lava field drains.
  2. Cross the cooled ground and follow the lower ruins past the Capra Demons and Burrowing Rockworms. Descend the large staircase toward the Demon Firesage entrance.
  3. Before entering that boss, take the left branch along the narrow ruined walkway. Defeat or draw aside the Taurus Demons, then continue toward the chest at its end.
  4. Several Rockworms emerge around the last stretch. Clear a route, open the chest for the ember and return or use a Homeward Bone.
  5. Return to Vamos in the Catacombs. His workshop is reached by the successive drops below the broken spiral staircase. Speak to him at the anvil and give him the ember.
  • The Rockworms can surround you and damage equipment with their attacks. Leave room to retreat instead of opening the chest while being hit.

Notes

  • Fire +10 access: Vamos uses the ember to modify a compatible Fire +5 weapon to +6, opening reinforcement through Fire +10. Initial Fire conversion from normal +5 does not require this ember.
  • Materials: The +5 to +6 modification costs one Red Titanite Chunk. Reaching Fire +9 from +5 uses seven red chunks in total. Fire +10 requires one Red Titanite Slab.
  • Fire and Chaos: Fire adds fire damage and removes attribute-based damage scaling. Chaos is a separate branch created from Fire +5 with the Chaos Flame Ember. Fire +10 is not a prerequisite for Chaos.
  • Hand-in and later journeys: Giving the ember unlocks the relevant modifications for that blacksmith for the rest of the journey. It is not spent once per weapon. Embers and their hand-ins reset in NG+, while already reinforced equipment keeps its upgrades. Collect the ember again if you want to make more weapons on that path.
  • Using the unlock: Choose Modify Equipment for a path change or to cross its +5 or +10 limit. Ordinary reinforcement within an unlocked stage can be done at another blacksmith or with the Weapon Smithbox at a bonfire. Carrying an ember without giving it to the right smith does not unlock the modification.
