Weapon behavior

Uses a shield bash instead of a left-hand parry. Carrying it does not provide a conventional parry action.

Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.

Reinforcement and comparison

Reduces blocked physical damage by 100%, magic by 80%, fire by 75% and lightning by 65%. Starts with 80 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.

Reinforce to +5 with Twinkling Titanite. Reinforcement improves attack damage, but stability stays at 80 and the normal damage-blocking percentages stay unchanged. Has no elemental conversion paths.

In-game description

Weapon type: Greatshield
Attack type: Strike

Mossy round greatshield used by the guardian
of the Darkroot Garden, the Stone Knight.
The Stone Knight is a creation of ancient
magic, and this shield is imbued with the
same power, but is also extremely heavy.

Where to find

Enemy drop

Darkroot Garden

  1. From the bonfire behind the illusory wall near the sealed forest door, follow the path toward Moonlight Butterfly.
  2. Defeat the sleeping giant Stone Knights in the garden clearing and inspect their loot. Rest at the bonfire to repeat.
  3. These are the stone-armored knights with a sword and shield, not the plant enemies or Forest Hunter NPCs.

Notes

  • Requirements and weight: Requires 38 Strength and weighs 20.
  • Blocking at base reinforcement: Reduces blocked physical damage by 100%, magic by 80%, fire by 75% and lightning by 65%. Starts with 80 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.
  • Shield attacks: Uses a shield bash instead of a left-hand parry. Carrying it does not provide a conventional parry action.
  • Reinforcement: Reinforce to +5 with Twinkling Titanite. Reinforcement improves attack damage, but stability stays at 80 and the normal damage-blocking percentages stay unchanged. Has no elemental conversion paths.
  • Attack scaling: Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.
  • Temporary shield spells: Magic Shield and Strong Magic Shield can temporarily strengthen the left-hand guard when cast with a catalyst in the right hand. They replace one another, and two-handing the other weapon removes the shield enchantment. These are different from resins and melee weapon-enchantment spells.
  • Weight and magic guard: Weighs 20 and requires 38 Strength. It blocks 80% magic alongside complete ordinary physical protection, but is much heavier than Crest Shield.
  • No slowing spell: The shield does not cast the slowing effect used by the Stone Knight or Stone Greatsword. Its off-hand special action is a bash, and reinforcement leaves stability at 80.
