Reinforcement and comparison

Reduces blocked physical damage by 80%, magic by 80%, fire by 80% and lightning by 80%. Starts with 30 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.

Cannot be reinforced, converted or given a normal weapon coating. Its physical attack has no attribute scaling.

In-game description

Weapon type: Fists
Attack type: Strike

The Darkwraiths, incited by Kaathe, use the
power of the dark soul to absorb humanity, an
art shared by this weapon, which also acts as
a special shield. The ancients, particularly,
could sap the humanity of even a replete
saint in the blink of an eye.

Where to find

Covenant reward

The Abyss

Requirements

  • Defeat the Four Kings before placing the Lordvessel.
  1. Obtain the Lordvessel but leave it unplaced. Defeat Sif for the Covenant of Artorias ring. In New Londo, speak to Ingward on the ghost-house roof to receive the Key to the Seal, then use it to open the floodgate and drain the lower ruins.
  2. Equip the Covenant of Artorias ring, pass through the Four Kings fog and descend into the Abyss. Keep the ring on and defeat the Four Kings before placing the Lordvessel.
  3. Speak to Kaathe in the Abyss, accept his proposal and follow his Lordvessel instructions. Return with him and join the Darkwraith covenant. Placing the Lordvessel for Frampt before this route prevents this meeting.
  4. Joining the covenant awards the Dark Hand immediately. No Humanity donation is needed for this joining reward.

Enemy drop

New Londo Ruins

Requirements

  • Drain New Londo with the Key to the Seal.
  1. After opening the floodgate, descend into the lower city and defeat the armored Darkwraith enemies. Inspect their loot for the Dark Hand.
  2. These enemies respawn after resting, so repeat if needed. This drop route does not require joining Kaathe's covenant.

Notes

  • Requirements and weight: Has no attribute requirements and weighs 0.5.
  • Blocking at base reinforcement: Reduces blocked physical damage by 80%, magic by 80%, fire by 80% and lightning by 80%. Starts with 30 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.
  • Temporary shield spells: Magic Shield and Strong Magic Shield can temporarily strengthen the left-hand guard when cast with a catalyst in the right hand. They replace one another, and two-handing the other weapon removes the shield enchantment. These are different from resins and melee weapon-enchantment spells.
  • Guard and parry: In the left hand, the guard input creates the dark shield and the strong input parries. It has no attack deflection, so a blocked enemy weapon does not bounce away in the normal way.
  • Light but limited: Weighs 0.5 and blocks 80% of each main damage type. Its low 30 stability can still cost substantial stamina against a heavy hit. Strong Magic Shield can temporarily improve its guard.
  • Right-hand use: In the right hand it punches and can grab suitable targets to drain Humanity. Covenant rank limits the amount per successful drain, and a target has a finite supply. A failed grab can become a damaging punch and anger an NPC.
  • Reinforcement: Cannot be reinforced, converted or given a normal weapon coating. Its physical attack has no attribute scaling.
