In-game description

Key to the floodgates of New Londo, which
seal away the Four Kings who fell to Dark.

The Sealers flooded New Londo to banish
the Darkwraiths and the Four Kings.
The agonizing decision was made with the
realization that countless lives, and the
robust culture of the city, would be lost.
The victims now roam the ruins as ghosts.

New Londo Ruins: Ingward's roof

Requirements

  • Obtain the Lordvessel and keep Ingward alive and friendly.
  1. Take the lift beneath Firelink to New Londo. Cross the wooden bridges and use Transient Curse or another suitable method to deal with ghosts.
  2. Follow the upper walkways through the haunted buildings. In the large ghost-filled house, climb the ladder inside the fireplace to the roof.
  3. Speak to Ingward, the red-robed man on the roof, while carrying the Lordvessel. Continue his dialogue to receive Key to the Seal.
  4. Return through the building and follow the upper route to the floodgate tower. Unlock its gate with the key and operate the lever to drain lower New Londo.

New Londo Ruins: Ingward's roof

Requirements

  • Ingward is still alive.
  1. Reach Ingward by the roof route above. Killing him provides the key even before you have the Lordvessel.
  2. Use the key at the floodgate tower and operate the lever to drain the city.
  • This removes Ingward's shop and curse-removal service for this journey. Wait for his gift if you want to preserve him.

Notes

  • Receiving versus placing: Ingward's friendly gift requires possession of the Lordvessel. You do not need to place it at the Firelink Altar first.
  • Drainage: Opening the floodgate exposes lower New Londo and its Darkwraiths. This drainage remains in effect for the current journey.
  • Abyss requirement: The key does not protect you in the Abyss. Equip Covenant of Artorias, obtained from Sif, before dropping into the Four Kings arena and keep it equipped during the fight.
  • Kaathe route: If you want to meet Kaathe, defeat Four Kings before placing the Lordvessel. You can obtain the vessel first and use it to receive Ingward's key without killing him.
  • Different New Londo key: Key to New Londo Ruins opens the Valley shortcut upstairs. It does not operate the floodgate, and Master Key cannot replace Key to the Seal.
  • Later journeys: This key is removed when a new journey begins. Collect it again if you need to reopen its lock; unlocking the door in the previous journey does not keep it open.
