Weapon behavior

Uses a dedicated parry action with a longer active window than an ordinary shield parry. It can help with timing, but you still need to respond to the enemy attack and choose an attack that can be parried.

Reinforcement and comparison

Crystal reinforcement can improve stability further, but reduces durability and prevents ordinary repairs. Choose it only if you are prepared to replace the shield when its remaining upgrade opportunities and durability run out.

In-game description

Weapon type: Small Shield
Attack type: Strike

Very small round metal shield.
Parry attacks with large center protrusion.

Small shields are always less stable, but
landing critical hits after parry is easier.
This shield is specialized for parrying.

Where to find

Merchant purchase

Undead Burg

Cost: 800 Souls · Stock: ∞

Requirements

  • Reach Firelink Shrine after leaving the Undead Asylum.
  • Keep the male Undead Merchant alive and friendly.
  1. If you have not reached Undead Burg yet, leave Firelink Shrine by the stairs climbing toward the large stone bridge. Fight past the Hollows on the hillside and enter the water passage inside the bridge. Watch for the rat near the entrance, then follow the passage to the exit and stairs into Undead Burg.
  2. Follow the route through the buildings and up onto the rampart. Clear the Hollows and the crossbow soldier on the small tower, then enter the bonfire room beside that tower. Rest here before looking for the merchant.
  3. Leave the room and clear the nearby crossbow soldier and the Hollows on the lower platform. If you rested, these enemies will have returned.
  4. Look for the short walkway to a separate rooftop guarded by two soldiers with spears and shields. Cross to that roof and deal with both soldiers.
  5. Break the wooden crates around the stair opening on the rooftop, then go downstairs. Check the room for the Hollow hiding behind the furniture before stopping to shop.
  6. Go through the doorway onto the outside ledge. Speak to the seated merchant and buy Buckler from his shield inventory.
  • Keep attacks away from the merchant. Killing him permanently removes this shop for the current playthrough.

Enemy drop

Undead Parish

Requirements

  • Reach the parish church and the bonfire above Andre.
  1. From the church in Undead Parish, cross the long stone bridge to the building where Andre works. Rest at the bonfire inside, one floor above his anvil.
  2. Go upstairs from the bonfire and cross back to the church. Look for the rapier knight with a small round Buckler in the front section. Another rapier knight guards Knight Shield in the narrow side corridor on the Parish approach. Draw the chosen knight away from other enemies before fighting.
  3. Loot any item they leave behind. Return across the bridge to the bonfire and rest to bring the knights back, then repeat. You do not need to defeat the Bell Gargoyles to farm these knights.
  • Only the rapier-and-Buckler variant drops this item. Do not attack while it holds its sword out in a parrying stance.
  • This is a random drop. A clear of the church does not guarantee one.

Notes

  • Both requirements matter: Requires 7 Strength and 13 Dexterity and weighs 1.5. The Dexterity requirement is easy to overlook when buying it as a parry tool.
  • Specialized parry: Uses a dedicated parry action with a longer active window than an ordinary shield parry. It can help with timing, but you still need to respond to the enemy attack and choose an attack that can be parried.
  • Blocking tradeoff: Its base physical reduction is only 76%, with 40 stability. Carrying a Buckler for parries does not give the full physical protection of a metal shield such as Heater Shield.
  • Elemental protection: Blocks 32% magic, 65% fire and 53% lightning at base level. Fire is its strongest elemental reduction, but it still lets some fire damage through.
  • Alternative acquisition: Rapier-wielding Balder Knights can drop Buckler. Look for the knight with the small round shield, rather than the straight-sword knight with a larger shield. Buying a copy avoids the random drop.
  • Temporary shield spells: Magic Shield and Strong Magic Shield can temporarily strengthen it. Hold the shield in your left hand and cast with a catalyst in your right. These are shield spells, separate from the resins and weapon-enchantment spells used on melee weapons.
  • Later forging: A normal +10 copy can be used at the Giant Blacksmith to make Crystal Ring Shield with the Soul of the Moonlight Butterfly, or Greatshield of Artorias with the Soul of Sif. Forging changes this shield into the new item, so keep a spare if you want both.
  • Crystal upgrade warning: Crystal reinforcement can improve stability further, but reduces durability and prevents ordinary repairs. Choose it only if you are prepared to replace the shield when its remaining upgrade opportunities and durability run out.
