In-game description

Rare tiny black sprite found on corpses.
Use to gain 1 humanity and restore a
large amount of HP.

This black sprite is called humanity, but
little is known about its true nature.
If the soul is the source of all life,
then what distinguishes the humanity
we hold within ourselves?

Where to find

Merchant purchase

Firelink aqueduct / Lower Undead Burg

Cost: 5000 Souls · Stock: 1

Requirements

  • Keep the female Undead Merchant alive and friendly.
  1. Use the Basement Key from Undead Parish to open the Lower Burg descent near the Hellkite bridge. Continue past the dogs and assassin ambushes toward the Capra Demon fog.
  2. Take the stairs beside that fog down toward the Depths entrance. Follow the adjoining tower stairs up to the aqueduct passage.
  3. Speak through the bars to the merchant, then open the nearby shortcut door back toward Firelink. Her stall can be revisited through that shortcut.
  4. Buy Humanity from the female Undead Merchant's purchase menu.

Merchant purchase

Firelink Shrine

Cost: 10000 Souls · Stock: 3

Requirements

  • Keep Patches alive and friendly through his Tomb encounter.
  1. Survive Patches' trap in the Tomb of the Giants. Answer no to his question about being a cleric, return from the pit and settle the encounter without making him hostile.
  2. Defeat Nito, then find Patches on the graveyard side of Firelink Shrine and open his shop.
  3. Buy Humanity from Patches's purchase menu.

Merchant purchase

Royal Wood

Cost: 10000 Souls · Stock: 13

Requirements

  • Access Artorias of the Abyss.
  • Keep Marvellous Chester alive and friendly.
  1. Free Dusk in Darkroot Basin and obtain the Broken Pendant from the first Crystal Golem in the Duke's Archives. Return to Dusk's cave, use the portal and defeat Sanctuary Guardian.
  2. Cross Royal Wood to the stone arena where Artorias waits. Before entering the boss fog, cross the nearby bridge and find Chester leaning against the wall. Speak to him and open his shop.
  3. Buy Humanity from Marvellous Chester's purchase menu.
  • Killing the real Chester removes this shop. His separate invading phantom is a different encounter.

Treasure pickup

Firelink Shrine

  1. From the central bonfire, walk to the well immediately behind it. Collect the three Humanity items from the nearby corpse.

Repeatable enemy drop

The Depths

  1. Unlock the Depths bonfire and use the nearby sewer passages to reach the rats.
  2. Kill and loot the rats, then return to the bonfire and repeat. Carried Humanity and a discovery item can improve eligible drops, but do not guarantee a Humanity on each kill.

Repeatable enemy drop

Chasm of the Abyss

  1. Defeat Artorias, descend through Oolacile Township and reach the Oolacile Township Dungeon bonfire.
  2. Enter the dark chasm and kill the floating Humanity Phantoms along the paths. Loot their drops and return to the bonfire to repeat. Avoid touching the phantoms; their bodies damage you.

Notes

  • Use: Fully restores HP and adds 1 to the carried Humanity counter. Using the item does not by itself reverse hollowing.
  • Bonfire spending: At a bonfire, spend one carried Humanity to become human. While human, spend another to kindle; kindling beyond ten Estus requires Rite of Kindling.
  • Death: Unused inventory copies survive death. Humanity already moved into the counter is dropped with your souls and must be recovered from the bloodstain.
  • Discovery and trades: Carried Humanity improves Item Discovery up to ten. The inventory item also has a once-per-journey crow exchange: Ring of Sacrifice.
