Reinforcement and comparison

Normal reinforcement improves stability, reducing stamina lost when a hit is blocked. It does not turn the shield's 88% physical reduction into 100%. Strength scaling affects damage when attacking with the shield, not its percentage of damage blocked.

Crystal reinforcement can improve stability further, but reduces durability and prevents ordinary repairs. Choose it only if you are prepared to replace the shield when its remaining upgrade opportunities and durability run out.

In-game description

Weapon type: Shield
Attack type: Strike

Wooden shield.
Decorated with the ancient symbol of
a double-headed eagle, painted yellow.

Wood shields are lighter than metal shields,
but with lower physical damage reduction,
and reduced shield stability.

Where to find

Starting equipment

Northern Undead Asylum

Requirements

  • Choose Cleric when creating the character.
  1. Collect the shield provided with Cleric's starting equipment during the Undead Asylum tutorial.

Merchant purchase

Undead Burg

Cost: 400 Souls · Stock: ∞

Requirements

  • Reach Firelink Shrine after leaving the Undead Asylum.
  • Keep the male Undead Merchant alive and friendly.
  1. If you have not reached Undead Burg yet, leave Firelink Shrine by the stairs climbing toward the large stone bridge. Fight past the Hollows on the hillside and enter the water passage inside the bridge. Watch for the rat near the entrance, then follow the passage to the exit and stairs into Undead Burg.
  2. Follow the route through the buildings and up onto the rampart. Clear the Hollows and the crossbow soldier on the small tower, then enter the bonfire room beside that tower. Rest here before looking for the merchant.
  3. Leave the room and clear the nearby crossbow soldier and the Hollows on the lower platform. If you rested, these enemies will have returned.
  4. Look for the short walkway to a separate rooftop guarded by two soldiers with spears and shields. Cross to that roof and deal with both soldiers.
  5. Break the wooden crates around the stair opening on the rooftop, then go downstairs. Check the room for the Hollow hiding behind the furniture before stopping to shop.
  6. Go through the doorway onto the outside ledge. Speak to the seated merchant and buy East-West Shield from his shield inventory.
  • Keep attacks away from the merchant. Killing him permanently removes this shop for the current playthrough.

Notes

  • Requirements and weight: Requires 6 Strength and weighs 1.0. Cleric starts with it, so that class does not need to buy another copy just to have this shield.
  • Physical protection: Blocks 88% of physical damage on a successful ordinary block. The remaining physical damage can still reach your health, so it will not give the complete physical protection of a Heater Shield.
  • Elemental protection: Its base protection is 40% against magic, 30% against fire and 65% against lightning. It is better at blocking lightning than fire, but mixed attacks can still damage you through the guard.
  • Parrying: The left-hand strong input parries. Use it to set up a riposte against attacks that can be parried; it does not make every enemy attack parryable.
  • Reinforcement and scaling: Normal reinforcement improves stability, reducing stamina lost when a hit is blocked. It does not turn the shield's 88% physical reduction into 100%. Strength scaling affects damage when attacking with the shield, not its percentage of damage blocked.
  • Temporary shield spells: Magic Shield and Strong Magic Shield can temporarily strengthen it. Hold the shield in your left hand and cast with a catalyst in your right. These are shield spells, separate from the resins and weapon-enchantment spells used on melee weapons.
  • Later forging: A normal +10 copy can be used at the Giant Blacksmith to make Crystal Ring Shield with the Soul of the Moonlight Butterfly, or Greatshield of Artorias with the Soul of Sif. Forging changes this shield into the new item, so keep a spare if you want both.
  • Crystal upgrade warning: Crystal reinforcement can improve stability further, but reduces durability and prevents ordinary repairs. Choose it only if you are prepared to replace the shield when its remaining upgrade opportunities and durability run out.
