Weapon behavior

Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.

Reinforcement and comparison

Reduces blocked physical damage by 85%, magic by 40%, fire by 75% and lightning by 70%. Starts with 56 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.

Reinforce to +15 with ordinary Titanite materials. On this path, stability rises from 56 to 70; the listed damage-blocking percentages stay unchanged. Andre needs the Large Ember for +5 to +6 and the Very Large Ember for +10 to +11.

In-game description

Weapon type: Shield
Attack type: Strike

Bronze shield of the gargoyle guarding the
Bell of Awakening in the Undead Church.
The gargoyle's skin is tough by itself, and
perhaps its shield may have been a prop,
for it is a rare example of a metal shield
that does not reduce physical damage 100%.

Where to find

Enemy drop

Undead Parish

  1. Climb the church ladders to the Bell Gargoyles roof and defeat the bosses. Inspect their rewards for the shield.
  2. The shield is separate from Gargoyle Tail Axe, which requires a tail cut. Cutting a tail is not a requirement for the shield drop.

Enemy drop

Anor Londo

Requirements

  • Reach Anor Londo.
  1. Take the lift down from the first Anor Londo bonfire area and defeat the gargoyle on the platform.
  2. After crossing the Painting Guardian rafters and operating the central staircase, defeat the other gargoyle around the rotating bridge. Check the loot from both encounters.
  • These gargoyles do not respawn, so resting does not create another ordinary farming run.

Notes

  • Requirements and weight: Requires 12 Strength and weighs 4.
  • Blocking at base reinforcement: Reduces blocked physical damage by 85%, magic by 40%, fire by 75% and lightning by 70%. Starts with 56 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.
  • Parrying: Can parry with the left-hand strong input. A successful parry opens an eligible enemy to a riposte with your attacking weapon; it does not make every attack parryable.
  • Reinforcement: Reinforce to +15 with ordinary Titanite materials. On this path, stability rises from 56 to 70; the listed damage-blocking percentages stay unchanged. Andre needs the Large Ember for +5 to +6 and the Very Large Ember for +10 to +11.
  • Conversion choices: Magic, Fire and Lightning conversions change attack damage and the corresponding elemental guarding instead of continuing the normal path's stability improvements. Divine adds Faith-scaled magical attack damage, rather than Faith-scaled blocking. Crystal can improve stability on suitable shields but sharply reduces durability and prevents ordinary repairs.
  • Attack scaling: Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.
  • Temporary shield spells: Magic Shield and Strong Magic Shield can temporarily strengthen the left-hand guard when cast with a catalyst in the right hand. They replace one another, and two-handing the other weapon removes the shield enchantment. These are different from resins and melee weapon-enchantment spells.
  • Metal with incomplete protection: Blocks only 85% physical damage despite being metal. Its 75% fire and 70% lightning reduction are separate strengths, not complete protection.
  • No weapon resistance bonus: The shield does not share the passive resistance bonus associated with Gargoyle Tail Axe and Gargoyle's Halberd. Similar equipment names do not make those effects interchangeable.
