Weapon behavior

Uses a shield bash instead of a left-hand parry. Carrying it does not provide a conventional parry action.

Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.

Reinforcement and comparison

Reduces blocked physical damage by 100%, magic by 40%, fire by 75% and lightning by 50%. Starts with 72 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.

Reinforce to +15 with ordinary Titanite materials. On this path, stability rises from 72 to 86; the listed damage-blocking percentages stay unchanged. Andre needs the Large Ember for +5 to +6 and the Very Large Ember for +10 to +11.

In-game description

Weapon type: Greatshield
Attack type: Strike

Metal greatshield. Used by Knight Berenike,
known for his heavy armor. This thick plate
of iron is heavily defensive but ultra heavy.
Greatshields are very stable, and deflect
attacks. However, one cannot parry,
and instead bashes with the shield.

Where to find

Merchant purchase

Sen's Fortress

Cost: 8000 Souls · Stock: ∞

Requirements

  • Ring both Bells of Awakening and reach the fortress rooftops.
  • Keep the Crestfallen Merchant alive and friendly.
  1. Reach the fortress rooftops and the narrow bridge with a broken section leading to a separate tower. Jump the gap to that tower; do not drop into the courtyard below.
  2. Go inside and find the seated Crestfallen Merchant. Open his shop, then return across the gap carefully.
  3. Speak to the Crestfallen Merchant and buy Tower Shield from the weapon inventory.

Enemy drop

Heavy Knight encounters

Requirements

  • Reach the relevant Heavy Knight; have the Peculiar Doll for the Painted World route.
  1. Defeat the large armored Berenike knights and inspect their loot. One guards the Parish church, and another stands on a side route on Sen's rooftops; these early encounters do not respawn.
  2. For repeated attempts, reach the Heavy Knight on the bridge before Priscilla in the Painted World. This knight respawns after resting.
  3. The shield is a chance drop. Buying from the Crestfallen Merchant avoids relying on any of these attempts.

Notes

  • Requirements and weight: Requires 30 Strength and weighs 13.
  • Blocking at base reinforcement: Reduces blocked physical damage by 100%, magic by 40%, fire by 75% and lightning by 50%. Starts with 72 stability. Stability controls the stamina spent on a block, separately from health damage that gets through.
  • Shield attacks: Uses a shield bash instead of a left-hand parry. Carrying it does not provide a conventional parry action.
  • Reinforcement: Reinforce to +15 with ordinary Titanite materials. On this path, stability rises from 72 to 86; the listed damage-blocking percentages stay unchanged. Andre needs the Large Ember for +5 to +6 and the Very Large Ember for +10 to +11.
  • Conversion choices: Magic, Fire and Lightning conversions change attack damage and the corresponding elemental guarding instead of continuing the normal path's stability improvements. Divine adds Faith-scaled magical attack damage, rather than Faith-scaled blocking. Crystal can improve stability on suitable shields but sharply reduces durability and prevents ordinary repairs.
  • Attack scaling: Strength scaling affects shield attack damage, not its damage-blocking percentages. Extra Strength does not improve stability once the requirements are met.
  • Temporary shield spells: Magic Shield and Strong Magic Shield can temporarily strengthen the left-hand guard when cast with a catalyst in the right hand. They replace one another, and two-handing the other weapon removes the shield enchantment. These are different from resins and melee weapon-enchantment spells.
  • Greatshield comparison: Weighs 13, needs 30 Strength and starts at 72 stability. It is lighter than Black Iron Greatshield and has slightly higher starting stability, but its 75% fire reduction is lower than Black Iron's 90%.
  • Blocking is not parrying: A high-stability guard is its main role. It uses a bash instead of a parry, so changing from a normal shield changes that left-hand action.
